Austin Psych Fest 3: Five Minutes With Von Haze

Leading up to Austin Psych Fest 3 (April 23rd - 25th at The Mohawk), we’ll be spending five minutes with many of the artists scheduled to perform at the festival. Today, we catch up with Brooklyn’s Von Haze.

What does the term "psychedelic" conjure up in your mind?

It's the feeling of blood rushing to your head. The sound of an ecstatic moment. A wah wah pedal helps.

Does Austin deserve to host a psychedelic music festival?

I love the fact that Austin is hosting a psych fest. it gives us a chance to come through and play in Austin when the SXSW circus is out of town.

Roky Erickson or Stevie Ray Vaughan?

Roky Erickson! Richard Fearless and I just did "Unforced Peace" for an upcoming Roky Erickson covers record so I might be biased but Stevie Ray Vaughan???? I can't imagine he'll get picked by anyone. I'm going out on a limb here and say whoever chooses Stevie Ray Vaughan is no fun. Stevie Ray Vaughan is the kind of music you listen to if you have a man cave and you're mean to your wife. It’s the sound of your uncle grilling with his shirt off. Not your cool uncle but the one you hate.

What is right or wrong with the music industry today?

It’s not all bad news. Records are still being made. There's never been a time in history like now where musicians can create and share their music without the help of massive antiquated distribution networks and large controlling companies. You can do it yourself or work with others, you have a choice.

If you could invite one musician, living or dead, on stage with you, who would it be?

Klaus Nomi. That would be amazing.
