Student's Death Prompts Suicide Awareness
The death of a University of Texas freshman early Monday morning, possibly a suicide, is prompting school officials to once again urge troubled students to seek help.
UT police officers discovered the body of Nima Benjamin Yousefy, 18, outside a campus parking lot at Brazos Street and MLK at about 2:40 Monday morning. According to a police spokesperson, authorities received multiple phone calls reporting a nonresponsive male lying on the ground floor of the garage.
"This is a challenging environment and for some students . . . [college] is the first time they've faced real adversity with classes," UT Counseling and Mental Health Center coordinator Chris Brownson told KVUE. "They sometimes are uprooted from their families and their support systems."
Counselors at the university -- who stress that suicide is the second highest cause of death on campus -- are quick to encourage troubled students to find support in light of the event.
Authorities believe Yousefy may have jumped to his death from atop the parking garage. According to his Facebook page, the freshman was a 2009 graduate of Round Rock High School and majored in psychology at UT.
