This Friday, Eric Bricker’s Visual Acoustics—one of our favorite films from AFF ’08, and a doc we strongly recommend seeing—will return to Austin for a weeklong run at the Regal Arbor.

Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, Visual Acoustics explores the life and work of iconic architectural photographer Julius Shulman, whose portraits of modernist homes have become singular works of art and definitive documents of the modernist movement. Featuring interviews with architect Frank Gehry, designer/director Tom Ford, artist Ed Ruscha, publisher Benedikt Taschen and, of course, Shulman himself, the film is an intimate portrait of an extraordinary talent.

Shulman—who, sadly, died in July of last year—was a warm, hilarious, interesting personality, and he illuminates every frame of the film with his exuberance and charm. In addition to the entertaining cast of characters, the film offers plenty of gorgeous photos, animation and archival footage guaranteed to please architects, design nerds, and photographers alike.

Director (and current Austinite) Bricker will be in attendance following the 7:50pm screenings on the 5th and 6th. He’ll also hold a Q&A after the 2:50pm screening on Sunday the 7th.

Bricker will also hold an in-store presentation tonight (tonight!) at Design Within Reach, where he’ll discuss the making of the film. The presentation will run from 6pm-8pm, and is sure to be a lot of fun.
