Preview: Appleseed Cast Perform Low Level Owl at the Mohawk [Saturday]

The Appleseed Cast were, for a time, a run-of-the-mill emo band taking their cues rather liberally from Mineral and Sunny Day Real Estate. That changed when the band holed up in the studio for several months in early 2001 to record what became the diptych Low Level Owl volumes I & II. The albums, which were released two months apart in the fall of 2001, signaled their departure from the strict confines of the emo genre, and turned out to be their defining statement as a band. The records run virtually uninterrupted from start to finish, and while they retained remnants of the band’s original sound, they were far more heavily influenced by repetition, ambient sounds, and mood than previous Appleseed Cast albums.

Despite the fact that they’ve just signed to a new label and released their seventh (depending on how you count them) album, the mostly instrumental Sagamartha, the band has decided to use their current tour as an opportunity to recreate both volumes of Low Level Owl live, in their entirety. It’s an ambitious task, and your opportunity to see how they fare is tonight at the Mohawk, with new Graveface Records labelmates Dreamend in support.
