Weekend Music Preview: TV Torso, Corto Maltese, & Jesse Woods [Emo's / Saturday]

For the most part, Emo’s was THE place to catch a show on Red River St. in the '90s. One could enjoy up-and-coming Austin bands as well as the biggest indie and punk touring acts without fail at the venue week after week. It’s no secret that the times have changed a tad over the last ten years. And although numerous other bars on Red River have joined in to compete for the title of hippest joint (and perhaps also the dubious tag of nastiest loo) this decade, Emo’s continues to regularly host relevant artists. This Saturday, the club offers up a two stage treat that reminds us of the many, many nights we spent at this once oh-so-treasured spot.

On the outside stage tonight, 101X FM and Soundcheck Magazine present Sweden’s The Soundtrack Of Our Lives (“Big Time” is a classic!), along with California’s Nico Vega and Austin’s My Education. Inside, the talent on display is all local and pretty stellar, we must admit. First on stage, Jesse Woods bares his soul with soothing folk ditties, Corto Maltese supply irresistible pop melodies immediately after, and TV Torso set up shop last to craft together indie-rock gems of the highest caliber. Check out our recent, memorable interview with Matt Oliver from TV Torso here; buy their impressive 7" singles here.

Nights of quality live music on both stages once made Emo’s a desirable the top destination for weekend revelery. It’s reassuring that the sure-to-be historic venue keeps on keeping on in strong fashion despite the emergence of a number of legitimate rivals on the scene.
