Nominate Your Neighborhood for Google's Super-Fast Internet Test

Google announced plans today to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in select communities. The ISP service would offer speeds up to 1 gigabit-per-second, or more than 100 times faster than many high-speed networks in the US today.

The Big G is also asking for "interested communities" to apply as a test market. Those requests can come either from local government officials or from interested citizens. This simple form allows you to nominate your neighborhood, or all of Austin, for the trial.

The information-gathering process runs through March 26, then Google will determine which communities will participate in the test run. The company announced that they're looking to serve "at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people."

Here's what I said if anyone's interested...

Austin is a leading tech city, and is home to more leaders/competitors in web services/technologies every day. Moreover, Austin is full of young, tech savvy users who love the web and embrace its continual evolution, myriad applications, and infinite possibilites... smart phones, netbooks, and other emerging web-enabled devices are seen in use by Austinites all over town. Also, Austin is host to SXSW Interactive, one of the largest and fastest growing emerging technologies conferences in the world. Several panels on this years schedule even have speakers from Google. Lastly, I found this form via a post on Austinist (http://austinist.com/2010/02/1..., an Austin-centric community blog run and written by a large group of tech savvy, local volunteers. If Google is looking for a testbed rife with users that push the capabilities of the web (and bandwidth) in nearly every way, then I can't think of a better place than Austin, Texas.
