Dana Falconberry celebrates the release of her new album
Halletts tonight in the cozy confines of the Mohawk’s inside stage, and it’s appropriate venue for her to unveil the record. From its hand-made packaging (see the “Making of
Halletts” video below) to the sparse, acoustic recordings of the songs, it deserves an intimate setting for its debut. Although, fans of Falconberry will definitely recognize the songs she’ll feature on stage tonight: six of
Halletts’ eight songs appeared on her 2008 release
Oh Skies of Grey. This makes
Halletts an interesting entry into Falconberry’s discography—the singer rearranged the songs, removing any extraneous details in the process, so that the record plays almost like a collection of acoustic demos.
To wit: Falconberry describes the impulse to rerecord these songs as an attempt to render them “simply and truthfully
live, simple, and untouched, the way they were born.” The original recordings of these songs were already pretty austere and stripped down, but the rehashing of old material doesn’t make
Halletts superfluous—accompanied only by stand-up bass player Andrew Bergmann and back-up singers Gina Dvorak and Lauren McMurray—who prove to be excellent foils for Falconberry’s distinct voice—
Halletts features some of Falconberry’s best songs laid bare, and it suits them quite well.
