Austinist Altruist: How to Help Haitian Earthquake Relief Efforts
Doctors Without Borders - Doctors Without Borders has already treated more than 1,000 people on the ground in Haiti; the organization has extensive experience offering medical services in response to catastrophic events. Doctors Without Borders is currently setting up an inflatable field hospital, with two operating theaters, staffed with surgeons, anesthetists, and stocked with medical supplies. Donations can be made directly to Doctors Without Borders online with a credit or debit card. Online retailer Small Dog Electronics is matching funds of up to $200 per individual of donations to Doctors Without Borders through their website.
Red Cross - The Red Cross already had staff in Haiti at the time of the earthquake and are now mobilizing to send more help and supplies to the island. The International Committee of the Red Cross has set up a website to help restore contact between individuals in Haiti and their families abroad. Donations can be made online. Text "HAITI" to 90999 to make a $10 donation to the Red Cross' relief efforts in Haiti.
International Medical Corps - The International Medical Corps' Emergency Response Team is providing care outside of the the hospital near the Presidential Palace in Port-au-Prince. Donations can be made online.
The Silicon Valley Community Foundation has set up a matching fund where donations up to $50,000 will be matched dollar for dollar and donated to organizations that are providing disaster relief and recovery.
Charity Navigator has compiled a list of organizations that are responding to the crisis. The agencies are rated and Charity Navigator has also written up a guide for Giving in Times of Crisis.
Remember, every little bit helps and you can always raise funds in a group - hold a benefit garage sale, host a dinner party and ask for contributions, or put together a benefit concert.
