Free Week Highlight: Leatherbag, The Pons, & Danny Malone at Stubb's
Saturday, January 9th at Stubbs (801 Red River)
FREE, doors at 9 [info]
Free Week Free Week Free Week has your overflowing bosom of otherworldly and cost-effective goodness just about reached its point of earthly ceasing? Dost thou have in thy kindly arms any more delights with which our post-holiday doldrums may be cast into the fires of non-necessity? Is there yet another verbally absurdist imploration we can offer you, so you can have for us but one last weekend of excellence? ...Hopefully not. But what we can say is that this Saturday night has blessed us with one of Free Week's finest offerings, as not only do the proceedings continue elsewhere on Red River, but at Stubb's, where local faves Leatherbag, The Pons, and Danny Malone will be plying their fine craft. And bonus points for being inside, because being cold is for suckers.
The dignified Leatherbag headlines this night, and the consistently improving foursome, led by the Buddy Holly-esque Randy Reynolds, can sound quite a bit like The Velvet Underground, especially in the raucously fun "On Down the Line," a song whose mention of "Jesus' son" can't be an accident. Playing the middle role of the evening are The Pons, a wonderfully chill band who explains their name by citing brain anatomy and the locked-in syndrome of former Elle editor Jean-Dominique. And opening up is the somewhat goofy but always fun Danny Malone, who takes a folk template and injects into it a pop personality. And, just in case you forgot, it's all free.
