Evitas Botanitas Closing Soon

Austinite Jeff Byrd sent us a tip that Evitas Botanitas, the beloved South Austin Mexican restaurant run by Ruben and Juanita Rodriguez, will be shutting its doors for good next Monday, December 28th.

Ruben Rodriguez was diagnosed with a brain tumor earlier this year, and facing mounting medical expenses, the family had initially planned to sell the business. As Beetsolonely posted last Thursday, It appears that the restaurant's lease is about to expire and the family has no plans to reopen.

My favorite place in town by far. I ate there last Wednesday and chatted with Juanita a bit. She said that they will still do catering. She also said that eventually they MIGHT reopen somewhere else if they come across a place they can afford, but that they have a lot of things to take care of first and that they need some time off to figure things out. I wish them the best, and if they do happen to reopen at some point, which seems pretty unlikely given their current circumstances, I'll be one of the many satisfied customers waiting in line.

I'll miss Evita's and their cilantro-lime rice. But most of all Juanita and Ruben. They feel like family. I can't think of another restaurant like it in town

If you haven't been you owe it to yourself to get their tower of salsa before they close.
