Weekend Sports Roundup: Championships and Near-Misses
- The Lake Travis Cavaliers won their third consecutive state high school football championship on Saturday, defeating Longview, 24-17, in the Class 4A Division I title game. Lake Travis finished the season undefeated at 16-0 and extended their win streak to 46 games. Quarterback Michael Brewer threw for two touchdowns, while Andy Erickson ran for one touchdown and caught a pass for another score.
- The Westlake Chaparrals were on a verge of claiming a state championship in the 5A division on Saturday, but Euless Trinity's late touchdown gave the Trojans a 41-38 overtime victory. Westlake (13-3) tied the game 35-35 with a touchdown pass from Tanner Price to Miles Berger with 17 seconds left in regulation, then took a 38-35 lead in overtime on a Cody Rademacher field goal. But Trinity answered in overtime with a touchdown pass from Willie Hubbard to Brandon Carter in the corner of the end zone to seal the win.
- The University of Texas volleyball team also found themselves close to a title Saturday. The Longhorns led Penn State, two sets to none, and needed one more set to claim the NCAA title. But the top-ranked Nittany Lions rallied over the final three sets to become the first team to win three straight NCAA championships. Penn State (38-0) extended its record winning streak to 102 games. Texas' Destinee Hooker registered a career-high 34 kills and was selected as the NCAA Championship's Most Outstanding Player.
