Give Local: Guide to Holiday Charity [Part Two]

Yesterday we profiled some organizations that are providing services to our community's most needy who are looking for donations this holiday season. Today we're highlighting groups with volunteer opportunities that are just as helpful as cash donations. Although we might not have extra funds this year, many of us find ourselves underemployed with time to spare. We can't think of a better way to use up some of our free time, give back, feel useful, and gain some valuable experience.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Caritas
Cartias provides services and a safety net of resources to those experiencing poverty. They have a variety of volunteer opportunities with flexible time commitments. Their Serve for a Day campaign encourages groups to prepare and serve a meal in the Caritas community kitchen, host a food drive, or help repair transitional apartments. Volunteers looking for more regular work can assist refugees as they transition into their lives in Austin, help our city's homeless, or work with low-income families. Consider celebrating your Birthday with Caritas by inviting friends to volunteer for the day. Of course Caritas is also always looking for monetary donations, in-kind donations, and donations of professional services (even performing music for clients and at Caritas events!)

United Way
The United Way of Central Texas brings together the power of community to find lasting solutions to help our neighbors in need. Their Hands on Central Texas program matches volunteers with opportunities and provides Volunteer Project Leader Training classes. The United Way's 1 Hour For Kids initiative connects students in local districts with volunteers who, for one hour a week (at least), provide mentoring, tutoring, and act as positive role-models. The flexible program allows volunteers to work around their schedules and help out in ways they feel most comfortable. United Way has partnered with area non-profits including Communities in Schools, River City Youth Foundation, the Seedling Foundation, and Big Brother Big Sisters in order to help as many individuals as possible.

CASA of Central Texas
CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children and the organization advocates for children who have been abused or neglected and are under State care. Volunteer advocates thoroughly research a client's case, ensuring that the court systems keep the child's welfare and well being their top priority. Advocates usually commit to a year of service and, as a result of their hard work, CASA children spend less time in foster care, the State spends less taxpayer money on attorney services, and children in need are provided a smoother transition in obtaining services. Understanding that becoming a CASA advocate is a big commitment, the group has started a Done-in-a-Day campaign. Done-in-a-Day volunteers help out with special events, fundraisers, and supporting advocates.
