Another memory of WWII: An elderly woman I knew at my church in El Paso told me that on the night of the atom-bomb test her living-room window completely shattered. It wasn't like a rock was thrown through it. The entire thing just turned into splinters. When I talked to her one time in the 80s she said the mishap must have been caused by the atom bomb test that was conducted several miles north in the New Mexico desert.

I've heard from others too that a red flash appeared in the sky over El Paso on the night of the test. They wouldn't know what it was until weeks later of course.
