Regarding the troop increase in Afghanistan, I wonder if this may be the first step in reviving the draft. If the increase doesn't work, will Obama call for more? That will have to require a draft.
There should be a draft. The potential of being drafted or having a friend/family member drafted is the only way to get the average American to give a shit.
Up to this point, the shitty economy has been all the "draft" they need to meet recruiting targets. If more troops are needed, the feds will just implement a "war surtax" to pump the brakes a bit on the economy.
The problem I have with allowing the economy to drive recruiting is that you end up with a military force comprised of people who had no financial alternative. Not only is this not fair, it's morally bankrupt.
As I alluded to above, when middle-/upper-middle-class Americans have to worry about their kids getting drafted, they'll start to pay a little more attention to our foreign policy.
