The Mohawk (912 Red River)
10:00pm, Inside
[info]
If the J. Tillman show outside isn't enough to lure you to The Mohawk on this post-Thanksgiving eve, here's two more reasons: the debut performance by Brackett & Co., and a chance to catch hot upstarts Real Estate.
Who or what is this Brackett & Co., you may ask? Sounds possibly like a cement siding business, but in reality it's a new band fronted by Okkervil River multi-instrumentalist Scott Brackett. Travis Nelsen and Brian Cassidy (also of Okkervil) contribute drums and guitar respectively. On bass it's Jeff Johnston, perhaps most notably of Lil' Cap'n Travis.
The band has a nice sort of slacker edge, and Brackett's vocals recall the unpredictable loveliness of Alex Chilton's. Supporting Brackett & Co. are the New Jersey quartet Real Estate, who just dropped their well-received self-titled debut earlier this month. The band favors a relaxed and almost lackadaisical feel, though live they sharpen their edge and come closer to a Crazy Horse-type jamboree. The band features the guitar work of Matthew Mondanile III, a.k.a. Ducktails, and bass from Alex Bleeker, who has visited Austin in the past under the moniker Dinosaur BBQ.

This is a great band, I really like them.
Go see them if you have the chance.
