Little introduction is needed for that maven of cult followership, that original espouser of the effed narrative, that yelper of the adventures of the disturbed you know all too well, The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle. Fashioning tales ranging from the intensely Biblical to the intensely meth-addled, Darnielle has been passionately plying his trade since he burst onto the underground scene with a scad of nineties cassette recordings that made his unique voice and narrative gift a must-know for any aspiring music tastemaker. He reached his popular apex with the boombox-abandoningly well-produced Tallahassee, which featured a slew of instant classics, perhaps chief among them being the anthemic and joyfully misanthropic "No Children." Now riding high on a new release that has seen him regain much of the acclaim he'd lost the last few years (some accused him of being overly self-imitating), The Life of the World to Come is sure to provide Darnielle with plenty of fresh fodder for his famously inspired and enjoyably awkward stage performance, to be seen tonight at Antone's.
Getting the crowd ready for Darnielle is an act just as worthy of attention, Canada's everywhere-you-look go-to man on the strings, Owen Pallett. His one man tour de force, Final Fantasy, has found the love of both critics and allusion-inspecting fans ever since his splash upon the scene with 2005's Final Fantasy Has a Good Home. Last year's double EP attack Plays to Please and Spectrum, 14th Century revealed his evolving and engaging lyrical approach along with a bounty of satisfyingly dark violin loops. In all honesty, if this were just about any other show, Final Fantasy would be the headliner---that's how good he is.
Opening up is a former Dirty Projector, the ear-catching Larkin Grimm, whose uses her stunning voice to build folk-infused psychedelica. Put it all together and this is just the right show to welcome autumn to Austin's doorstep---if you'd like a shot at winning a pair of tickets to this excellent lineup, jot your info in the box after the jump.
