Why We Don't Like You: Baylor Bears
Each week, we'll look at some reasons to taunt, belittle, and bully the Longhorns' football opponent. This week: the Baylor Bears.
- "I'm a Baylor Bear, Man": Baylor must have angered the country music gods with a rendition of "I've Been Everywhere" that touts the wonderful curriculum you can partake of in Waco. ("Major in Architecture, Great Texts, English, Classics, Philosophy, Theater, Accounting, and French") One version was shown in a pre-game video early in the season, but that was quickly yanked from the rotation. Thankfully, this version lives on.
- Friends in High Places: In the final days of the old Southwest Conference, teams scrambled to find new leagues to take them in. Texas and Texas A&M had no problem, but it took well-placed political connections to help Baylor and Texas Tech find a place in the newly formed Big 12 Conference. Ann Richards, then governor, and Bob Bullock, then lieutenant governor, were both Baylor grads. If TCU had the same type of muscle, we might be looking at No. 3 Texas vs. No. 4 TCU this weekend.
- Later, City Slacka: Coach Art Briles has given nearly every player on the team a nickname. “Ninety percent of the nicknames don’t make sense,” said quarterback Blake Szymanski (Shazam). Tight end Justin Akers is “Marty Akins," receiver Romie Blaylock is “Romeo," Jeremy Sanders is "Motown" and quarterback Robert Griffin is "Cream" (as in "rises to the top").
