How long has Model Citizen been in operation?
I started out in 2005 with two designs, working out of a small garage apartment in South Austin. Now I have over 30 apparel items available and last year I added jewelry to the line.
Your designs are delightfully off-center, both edgy and playful all at once (tigers, cupcakes, guns...). Where do you get your inspiration?
My friends are to blame. Every Model Citizen item is inspired by them and this goes without saying but, they are amazing! The ladies in my drawings have tiger heads because it was the only way I could think to illustrate the “kicking ass and taking names” spirit of my friends. I mean - they are creative, talented, driven and there for you, no matter what. These ladies have big laughs, great taste, and impressive dance moves... and I try my best to show that in my drawings.
Before Model Citizen, what was your artistic background?
I have never studied art outside of my home. In high school I made zines and painted a lot. I've always kept a sketchbook and used to draw some pretty awful comics. A few years back I designed a some show posters for local bands like The Golden Arm Trio, Madamimadam, Young Heart Attack, etc., which was a lot of fun!
I actually went to school to be an audio engineer but I'm happier being CEO of Model Citizen.
What are your favorite materials to work with?
Currently I am obsessed with lace, shrinky dinks, recycled chain from old jewelry, and my yudu machine. The possibilities are endless!
Your designs have received lots of media attention lately - Craftzine, BUST, etc. Is your consumer base becoming a more national one these days as a result?
Yes! Even International! I've been filling orders all over the world recently. From right here in Austin all the way to Hong Kong, even Australia. It's exciting and I get introduced to people I'd never have met otherwise.
What excites you about the Austin craft scene?
Everything! Creative juice just oozes out of this city. Our community is unlike any other. People are as friendly as they are talented and you can't get that everywhere.
Which other crafters or artists are you looking forward to visiting during EAST?
So so many! Let's see...I'm super excited to stop by Ian Shults' studio where he will be hanging out with the Really White Vigilante. Monique Capanelli of Articulture Designs and Jennifer Chenoweth will both have work on display at Fisterra Studio, which is very exciting. Also, Jeffrey Swanson is a favorite! I saw his show at BiRDHOUSE last week and it was amazing! My fellow Etsy Austinites will be demoing some crafts and selling their goodies at Smith Road Studios, so I will definitely be stopping by there!
What will people be able to see when they tour your studio?
Hopefully not a giant mess! No, I'm just kidding. Like many artists I also live in my studio, so people will be able to visit my cozy corner of the world. I've tried hard to get the most out of this small space and I'm pretty proud of it. I'll have new designs on display along with clothing and jewelry for sale. I'll also have the Stitchable Eco Tote Bag I designed with Sublime Stitching available for sale. It will come with floss and needle for all you stitchers out there!
Plus, stopping by Model Citizen HQ is a two-for-one deal! I share space with the BiRDHOUSE Gallery on Cesar Chavez where you can see the "Teeny-Tiny show" featuring an array of artists work in a 4" x 4" format... including a piece by yours truly.
It is not to be missed! There will be kegs and possibly even snacks on the porch too, so come hang out with us!
What is your favorite part about EAST?
Discovering even more reasons to love my neighborhood and meeting my neighbors. Plus - it's a chance to get your holiday shopping done while supporting our amazing community.
