Neon Indian
An Austin band by way of Brooklyn, Neon Indian is the elusive new project of Alan Palamo (also behind the one-man electro project Vega). The name Neon Indian itself gives due justice to the type of music Palamo produces—mystical synth noise, kooky hooks, and sensual vocals. The project started as a bunch of lo-fi recordings before the No Way Down EP was made in 2008. Full of reverb and distortion, song titles like "Should Have Taken Acid With You," add to the mystique of the project. The ensemble is completed by the visual stylings of Alicia Scardetta, who the acid song is apparently about. The visuals seem like a perfect way to compliment the fuzzy ditties to make for a full multimedia experience.
Palamo will perform with both Neon Indian and Vega on the Blue stage at Fun Fest. Be sure to check out both sets to his full range of musicality.
L.A.X.
This electronic dance band has been spreading synth beats and love all our its native roots lately. We had the pleasure of seeing them at the FlipScene Halloween Bash last week, where they put on a stunning performance dressed as characters from Alice in Wonderland. They played unofficial parties at SXSW, had a set at ACL and will perform at Fun Fun Fun Fest this weekend. For something that started as a electro duo performing at house parties, L.A.X. has come a long way and deserves this current burst of limelight.
The costumes could be partly to thank, but the cohesion between the six-piece group at the Flip Scene party made for a captivating and bright sound that kept passing zombies interested enough to stick around. Any band with six members tends to get messy and raucous on stage, but L.A.X. works together professionally and beautifully, which each member contributing something worthwhile. Vocalists Erin Jantzen and Yadira Brown bounce seductive harmonies off one another, giving depth to electronic mix. Frontman Andrew Collins retired his metal roots to spend time finding those sweet hooks and driving pop beats that make L.A.X. so wildly enjoyable. The band's sound is rounded and full with the addition of drummer Jon Oswald, guitarist Rory Phillips and bassist Chris D’Annunzio. Be prepared to party at 1:05 on the Blue stage Saturday, because L.A.X. will be anxiously waiting.
