Fun Fest Artist Profiles: The Strange Boys and Torche

Local heroes and In The Red-signees The Strange Boys will bring their 60s pastiche and summer fun party vibe to Fun Fun Fun Fest’s yellow stage on Sunday afternoon. While The Strange Boys do seem to fit into the lately omnipresent, and as some may argue, moribund lo-fi garage pop genre, they also manage to transcend many of their contemporaries. Taking cues from influences ranging between Dylan and The Black Lips, there’s something about their combination of ramshackle garage rock jangle; slightly paranoid, occasionally cautionary, and often irreverent lyrics; and their loose, off-the-cuff live shows that gives them an edge over so many groups playing samey-sounding blown-out 60s retreads. They play around town often, but if you’ve yet to see Strange Boys do their thing live, make an effort to swing by the yeller stage at 5:20 on Sunday and check out one of the better young bands Austin’s produced in the last 18 months.

As early afternoon advances into the early evening on Sunday, the mighty Torche will occupy the 6:15 slot on the black stage to singe the faces of those still standing after Riverboat Gamblers’ set. After the dissolution of the excellent Miami-based stoner/doom/sludge band Floor in 2004, singer and guitarist Steve Brooks regrouped to form Torche, and quickly rose to prominence with their improbable but entirely awesome melodic pop metal. After a respectable debut LP and a handful of EPs, the band hit its stride with last year’s Meanderthal, a fantastic record that stands on its own merits, refusing to fit neatly into any extreme music genre. As noted in last week’s edition of Austinist’s own Le Diamant Brut, the imagery associated with the band is overblown and fantastical, and their sound is thundering and heavy but still melodic and, we daresay, accessible. In short: \m/

I know it's kind of random, but my Dad absolutely love the The Strange Boys.. It's kind of strange, because he doesn't like 60's music, but he likes their style.. even though it basically sounds like 60's music.. Haha.. Don't ask..
