Show Alert: Austinist Presents Vic Chesnutt and Band [Featuring members of Fugazi & Godspeed!]

Vic Chesnutt is currently touring in support of his latest record, At The Cut, and from this album and its tour are trailing an entourage of indie notables. Featuring Guy Picciotto of Fugazi and David Payant of Silver Mt. Zion, the Vic Chesnutt band wraps up its tour with a show that promises to be a singularly appropriate pairing between band and venue at Central Presbyterian Church. We’re excited about this one, because church rafters seem to be the natural habitat of Vic Chesnutt’s voice—a voice so compelling it isn’t outdone even by the instruments of Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

At The Cut was co-produced by Picciotto and Howard Bilerman (of Arcade Fire). As with Chesnutt’s 2007 collaborative recording with the same group, North Star Deserter, it’s hard to say whether At the Cut is a dark album resigned to be lovely or a lovely album about dark resignation.

But you don't have to take our word for it: the At The Cut tour doesn’t meet the spotless virtue of Central Presbyterian’s acoustics until December 5th. So if you aren’t familiar with Vic Chesnutt (doubtless, your interest is piqued by someone involved in this project), there’s still plenty of time to get yourself acquainted.

In addition to no less than 15 solo releases, Chesnutt has teamed with Elf Power to release the album Dark Developments under the moniker The Amorphous Strums. He’s collaborated with a wide range of artists including Michael Stipe, Lambchop, Bill Frisell, Widespread Panic and the Cowboy Junkies. R.E.M., the Smashing Pumpkins, Madonna and Sparklehorse, among others, covered his songs on the tribute album Sweet Relief II: Gravity of the Situation. Oh, and he was the subject of the 1992 PBS documentary Speed Racer, and appeared in the film Sling Blade. Happy googling.
