If you want to sample some of Warpaint’s strange concoction, we recommend starting things off with the track "Billie Holiday" a cover, of sorts, of 1964’s hit "My Guy" sung by Mary Wells. Here, Warpaint seems to have taken the classic and simply melted it. The bleary, drugged songbird vocals create a contagious haze, earning these ladies their comparisons to Blonde Redhead and Chan Marshall.
Opening is Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, a SXSW breakout last year. His self-titled debut is both a straight-shooter and a sweet talker, full of earnest riffs and internal debate tournaments. With a little help from TV on the Radio's Kyp Malone and several members of Grizzly Bear, its production is gorgeous but retains all the grittiness of a solo act who’s comfortable with his contradictions, but not, perhaps, the multitudes he (barely) contains.
