While in town last weekend to host their Found Footage Festival, program curators Joe Pickett and Nick Prueher, managed to track down the genius behind one of our city's hidden video treasures: "At Home With English," a public access show that was hosted by Austinite Greg Thompson.
Thompson developed, produced, and starred in the eight-part ESL video series, which was first broadcast around twenty years ago and can still be seen today. A tireless advocate of adult ESL programs, he was recognized in 1999 with the TexTESOL "Excellence in Teaching" award, and is still spotted around town regularly.
The Found Footage guys have a video interview with Thompson in the works; in the meantime, the vintage clip above, featuring a fellow whom Pickett described to us as "yet another unsung hero of Austin," is worth the 75 seconds to watch.

I loved watching his show! Spotted him on the Town Lake Trail once and was star struck. One of Austin's unsung heroes indeed!
Awesome! This show was so very excellent. I first saw it back in 1996 or so, and kept trying to tell people about it, always hoping to catch it on while flipping through the public access channels. The delivery is very memorable. I remember at least one episode where he was shopping at the Whole Foods back when it was in the Brodie Oaks shopping center, where Sun Harvest is now (or at least that's my recollection). Great Austin nostalgia. Thanks Found Footage!
