Weekend Music Preview: Woven Bones Tour Kick-Off [Beerland / Friday]
The Philadelphia-based sextet has returned with their fourth LP, III (excluding covers record, Weed Tree) on Drag City. The sprawling psych-folk release continues the group's revitalization of the psychedelic revival, proving their place as leaders in the retro-indie folk revolution. The songs have a somewhat more upbeat tone than the preceding album, II, but there's not any philosophical departure in their sound. "The Road of Golden Dust" plods through hazy guitar phases and "That Which Darkly Thrives" is perhaps one of the most Espers'-like tunes they've ever written. All in all, a strong effort from a wildly talented group of musicians.

Alec Ounsworth Mo Beauty (Anti-)
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah frontman Alec Ounsworth -- another Pennsylvania native -- delivers Mo Beauty today on Anti-. Recorded in New Orleans, the album shows off the work of a talented backing band: George Porter, Jr. on bass, Stanton Moore on drums, Robert Walter on keys, and Matt Sutton on baritone and pedal-steel guitars, with additional help from some members of the diversely talented New Orleans community such as Mark Mullins, Craig Klein, Greg Hicks, Washboard Chaz, Shannon Powell, John Boute, Al "Carnival Time" Johnson, and Meschiya Lake. Sutton's pedal steel backing Ounsworth's frail wail take center stage throughout the album. The record is produced by Steve Berlin, who has also worked with Faith No More, Leo Kottke and the Replacements.
