Weekend Music Preview: Spend This Weekend At The Mohawk

We’ll admit it. We’re still not fully recovered from the mud-a-thon that was this year’s Austin City Limits Music Festival. And the 2009 Fun Fun Fun Fest, which has us licking our chops in anticipation, is still a few weeks away. Just when we thought it was safe to stay home for the weekend, a look at the line-up in store for us at The Mohawk has done away with any such feeble notions. Yes, the redoubtable Red River St. venue is home to three amazingly appealing nights of raucous rock ‘n’ roll all weekend.

The oft-scandalous, always fun Black Lips supply the ‘hawk with a healthy dose of bluesy garage-punk ditties on Friday. After dropping their fifth album 200 Million Thousand earlier this year, the lovable Georgians have stayed busy, touring regularly, and collaborating with the equally endearing duo of King Khan & BBQ (Arish Khan and Mark Sultan respectively) over the course of the year, resulting in The Almighty Defenders’ debut full-length (released last month). This evening’s set-list, however, should contain Black Lips material by and large; promising locals The Strange Boys and fellow Austinites The No No No Hopes precede the Lips outside while The Golden Boys, Jail, and The Mojomatics follow inside later.

On Saturday, legendary Seattle rockers The Murder City Devils return to Austin to cause much pandemonium, no doubt. Their performances at the 2007 Fun Fest and the ensuing afterparty at The Mohawk were nothing short of epic and the welcome announcement of this Saturday night’s gigs a few months back has had Red River regulars gleefully rubbing their hands at the prospect of another unforgettable night of mayhem. Oh, and one more thing, the show is sold out! Red X Red M and RatKing get things going outside; Bankrupt and the Borrowers (R.I.P. Jon Pettis) and Woodgrain closes out the night inside. It only gets louder on Sunday when A Place To Bury Strangers bring their brand of deafening shoegaze to The Mohawk. Having witnessed their aural onslaught previously, we highly recommend a pair of ear plugs and a fondness for piercing feedback is probably required as well. The show, also featuring Darker My Love, and All The Saints, is presented by the now Austin based internet radio giants WOXY.com. APTBS also perform at Waterloo Records at 5 p.m.

A couple of other noteworthy gigs this weekend -- AustinSurreal.com presents the Mayer Hawthorne’s Lonely Hearts Club Tour at Red 7 on Saturday night. The soulful sound of Mayer Hawthorne & The County is a useful alternative to the ruckus at The Mohawk all weekend. And don’t forget about the inevitable dance party that beckons at the Dan Deacon show on Friday outside at Emo’s -- get your tickets here.

Guessing Bankrupt & The Borrowers won't be playing last night, since Jon Pettis passed away this morning in a house fire that the rest of the band was able to escape. They're not playing tonight at Deville, but I hope they figure out a way to regroup for Mohawk tomorrow night and give Jon an impromptu send off.

Not sure what else to say other than RIP Jon and best of luck to the rest of Bankrupt.

"late night", not "last night".
