The indie rock narrative is historically more likely to celebrate than lament the loss of religious faith. Outside of the visionary flights of Sufjan Stevens and the lowercase c, adjective-not-noun-christian, Low, religion in indie music is not typically good news for its listeners.

But David Bazan, of Pedro the Lion, has built his musical persona largely on autobiographical songs narrating his fretful longing for belief. His is the uneasy province of agnosticism without the benefits of hindsight or the comforts of detachment. This translates musically into straightforward guitar melodies functioning mainly as the conduit for non sequiturs and one-liners that we can’t quite call zingers but that nonetheless carry that beloved hallmark of indie lyrics- irony. (Case in point: this line from “Rejoice,” on 2002’s Control: "Wouldn't it be so wonderful if everything were meaningless?")

Bazan tends to be one of those extemporizing artists who leaves few listeners lukewarm, so you should do yourself a favor and check him out- if for no other reason than to see which side of the fence you land on. Earning the chagrin of some and the fascination of others, Bazan casts an ever-vigilant, wistful eye toward faith the way you might watch from across the room a former lover who you know is bad for you, and you suspect will always turn you on.

Perhaps this preoccupation with religion is due to his musically chronicled struggle with alcoholism and the usefulness of enlisting a higher power for aid. At the end of the day, we probably all agree that prodigal sons are likely to have a deeper connection to religion than the relatively sinless. Then, we can move on to debating the perhaps more philosophically pressing question of whether there is at the moment still room in indie music for the lyric-centered.

Say Hi, (judiciously) formerly named Say Hi To Your Mom, will open, touring their recent release, a flirty youthful pop album called Oohs and Aahs.
