There's also a handful of remasters by Black Sabbath and Jesus Lizard this week and a slew of New Order vinyl reissues.
Built to Spill There Is No Enemy (Warner Bros)Since the 1990s Built to Spill has issued some of the most dramatic, hopeful and ambitious indie rock ever. In recent years, Doug Martsch and his unchanged lineup have been content to quietly continue down the path they started on with 1997's Perfect From Now On. This has included soaring on Martsch's airy vocals, reveling in his vibrant, freewheeling guitars and sulking in his sentimental lyrics both hopeful and tenuous. On Enemy, there's more of the same. It's not the epic return we might have hoped for, but there's more energy here than we've seen in years. "Good Ole Boredom" is a highlight, veering through Band-like guitar harmony and chugging solos with pristine ease.
It's return to the '90s on New Release Tuesday this week. Here we find ex-Sebadoh and Folk Implosion genius Lou Barlow rolling through his solo album much like he'd roll through, say, Harmacy, blending the chug and thud of his heavier work with the sincerity and anticipated Barlowisms of his quiet Implosion. "Sharing" is a relentless, pounding opener with all the power of "License to Confuse". "Take Advantage" is another highlight, though on the softer side of the spectrum. We don't know what it means to love someone like a pancake but we do love this record. A lot.
