Texas: We're Number Four!

A new Harris Interactive Poll ranks Texas as the fourth most popular state that people would choose to live in, trailing behind California, Florida and Hawaii. Among cities, the 2,498 U.S. adults surveyed put Dallas and Austin in 10th and 11th place, respectively, with New York City, Denver and San Francisco in the top three. [BusinessWire]

I have lived in Dallas, Austin, New York City, London, England and Boston. My favorite city is London, my least favorite city is Dallas. After London I would rank them (in order of preference): NYC, Boston then Austin. I honestly can't imagine why anyone would want to live anywhere in Texas.

Lord stompo- how about two areas where Austin wishes it could excel - diversity and mass transit.

Ans Swise my guess would be cost of living economic opportunity.

A corporate setting offers better pay, good benefits and career growth. Dallas benefits from a large corporate base that Austin doesn't have. I can pull up numbers but ask any recent college grads or immgrants where the best job opportunities are. Hell, think about it - why do cities like Dallas, Phoenix and Houston boom?

Listen, I can pile Dallas with the best of them, but to make a broad statement like it's impossible for Dallas to be more desireable than Austin is ignorant. Just look at Texas Relays to see how far we lag behind in certain areas.

  • Lord Stompo

    What areas would those be?

It's a lot easier for a person to find a decent job with benefits in Dallas. But who needs that when you've got ACL.

  • kenneth1

The only "decent jobs with benefits" I know about are in government, i.e. state or university. In that category, Austin has Dallas beat by a mile.

But I guess if your idea of good places to live is someplace where you can drive 90 miles a day round-trip to work on a 16-lane freeway, then yeah, I guess Dallas is better.

  • Grape Ape

Where are you getting that information from? I find it hard to believe. I guess you'd have to define "decent" as well.

  • seth

Don't move to New York. It sucks.

I don't know anyone who thinks that Dallas is a better place to live than Austin, and I'm including the people I know in Dallas.

Austin has much much more to offer.

  • Mister Jeff

There's no excuse for Dallas beating out Austin as a desirable place to live.
