On Wednesday night at La Zona Rosa, Jeremy Enigk and the rest of the original Sunny Day Real Estate lineup will take the stage, playing songs from their recently re-released LP2 and Diary.
Though SDRE were not the first band to be classified as emo, they shook up the rock'n'roll scene quite a bit in 1994 with Diary, casting a new light on a Seattle scene that had been dominated in the early '90s by bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Enigk's voice -- a fragile alto -- immediately took center stage. In 1995, the band released the follow-up to Diary with Sub Pop even though they'd broken up in the middle of recording. The label actually named the record LP2 and the pink color of the sleeve was chosen by drummer William Goldsmith as a joke. Enigk has confessed in interviews that most of his lyrics on the record are gibberish, stating that the recording process was so miserable, he tried to work through it as quickly as possible.
Enigk went on to a solo career, and Goldsmith and Nate Mendel joined forces with Dave Grohl in Foo Fighters. Though more SDRE records have been released since 1995, this year's reunion is the first with all four original members. Fans are ecstatic and the band seems thrilled. Check out the A.V. Club's interview with the group for more.
