Loose Lips Sink Ships: Texas Tech Coach Bans Twitter

Texas Tech coach (and head pirate) Mike Leach has told Twitter to walk the plank after some recent postings there by his players.

The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reports that All-American offensive lineman Brandon Carter and linebacker Marlon Williams posted items on Twitter over the weekend expressing disappointment with the Red Raiders' 2-2 start and their one-point loss to Houston.

Later Sunday afternoon, Williams also wrote, "Wondering why I'm still in this meeting room when the head coach can't even be on time to his on (sic) meeting."

Both Williams' and Carter's Twitter accounts have been deleted, and Leach said all the players' Facebook accounts will be monitored to make sure they don't disclose sensitive team information.

The news gets even worse for Carter, who has been stripped of his status as team captain and suspended indefinitely following a violation of team rules. The 6-foot-7, 335-pound lineman has received a lot of attention for his head tattoos and game-day look of goth eyeliner and colored mohawk.

None of that seemed to matter to Leach. When asked how much the offensive line will miss Carter, Leach said coolly, "Not at all."

Sure it's hypocritical for a coach who's known for talking openly and honestly about matters both on and off the field to crack down on innocuous Internet postings, but it's his ship and he'll run it how he pleases.
