When Nickel Creek decided to go on indeterminate hiatus, fiddler and singer-songwriter Sara Watkins did what anyone high on the fumes of early success might do -- she launched a solo venture. Now Watkins has her self-titled debut out. The record, recorded in Los Angeles and Nashville, has in it the west-coast country that has persisted in Los Angeles for at least sixty years.
It's radio ready even as its filled with nods to traditional American folk styles. Watkins' voice is breathy and sweet, and the tracks she's laid down make the most of her voice, which slides plaintiffly over pedal steel and plinking piano -- and, at times, of course, Watkins' own fiddle playing.
Sara Watkins will play at 1:20 p.m. on Friday on the Austin Ventures Stage.
