Preview & Giveaway: The Horrors @ Emo's [Saturday]

The Horrors strut into Emo’s on Saturday in support of their Mercury Prize nominated second album Primary Colours. The English five-piece was all the hype across the pond a few years ago on the strength of an eponymous EP and the debut full-length Strange House which featured a not-to-be-missed video in “Sheena Is A Parasite.” With Primary Colours, the band wanders further into the textured terrain that is atmospheric psychedelia, expanding and evolving its sound and successfully avoiding the dreaded sophomore slump.

Sure, everything from their Cramps-esque image to their whirlwind palette of shoegaze and new wave has been done before, but this is the type of band that makes rock ‘n’ roll interesting. They dress to impress, they DJ around London, they publish fanzines, and most of all, they construct impressive, ominous walls of sound via swirling guitars, organ and synth nuances, and Faris Badwan’s sometimes menacing, sometimes stoic vocals. And apparently, The Horrors’ live shows are not very long at all so you best get there on time. Or just get there early and enjoy noisy concoctions galore courtesy of San Deigo’s Crocodiles and Austin’s own Woven Bones. Besides sharing a penchant for reverb heavy, feedback drenched compositions, both bands are currently working with Zoo Music. The Californian label released Crocodiles’ Neon Jesus 7" recently; you can check out the artwork for Woven Bones’ upcoming EP The Minus Touch on Zoo Music’s website.
