Economic Downturn Be Damned, Locals Still Designing [Thursday Fashion Parties]

Two independent local fashion-related launches on Thursday are daring to buck the dismal trend of retail closures we've seen lately.

At the IF+D shop in the Second Street District, Austinite Sheri Bingham will unveil her new handcrafted upholstery collection, Iron Thread Design. The self-taught designer, who's a trained opera and jazz singer, credits among her myriad design inspirations such things as "children’s books [and] industrial machines." Iron Thread's inaugural lines incorporate frames sourced from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood and fabric ranging from organic hemp (the Eco line) to flax-based linen/cotton blends.

Iron Thread Design Launch Party
Thursday, September 24th, 6 - 9 p.m.
IF+D (208 Colorado)
Highlights: Lavender/Raspberry & Lemon-Lime Ginger Vodka Cocktails, tunes by Adrian Quesada and DJ Chicken George
RSVP: info@ironthreaddesign.com or call 512-736-3587 (we checked today, RSVPs are still being accepted)

South of Lady Bird Lake, there's a recently-opened shop touting itself as "Austin’s newest source for fashion fabric." The Common Thread carries a variety of modern, affordable and eco-friendly fabrice. Owner Jeanie Brown says she aims to "have options you won’t find elsewhere in town ... I wanted to offer the ever-expanding sewing and craft communities in Austin a new and exciting option beyond what you see at chain retailers.” Thursday's happy hour features discounts, door prizes, and, we're assuming, delicious libations.

The Common Thread Happy Hour
