Dell Acquires Perot Systems For $3.9 Billion

Two of the biggest technology names in Texas joined forces Monday as Dell acquired Perot Systems for $3.9 billion.

Perot Systems is an information technology services firm founded by H. Ross Perot in 1988. Perot's son, Ross Perot Jr., serves as the company's chairman.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the deal represents a huge bet by Dell that the national healthcare system gets an overhaul. Perot Systems gets 50 percent of its revenue by supplying information technology systems to hospitals, and would be in a prime position for lucrative government contracts if a federal plan to streamline electronic health records goes into effect.

The deal expands Dell's reach beyond hardware and into the IT services sector, giving the company a better footing on which to compete with IBM and HP.

Such a strange marriage indeed. When I heard this report initally, I was reminded of high school and his run for President.
