Weekend Art Roundup: Museum Day and Print Giveaway!


There are many great art events taking place around town this weekend. On Sunday, dozens of museums and galleries will have free and admission and special activities as part of Austin Museum Day. Follow this post after the jump to enter to win a print from photographer Kris Krug who will be participating in Saturday's Front Row photography show at The 5th Gallery. Here's a rundown of the weekend's highlights.


On Saturday, The 5th Gallery is hosting an opening reception for Front Row, an exhibit celebrating the art of live music photography. The party runs from 7pm to 11pm and will feature work by Erica Rodriguez, Moriah Powers, John Gomi and others. Also on Saturday, stop by the Scoot Inn to enjoy music, fashion, art, and skateboarding at We Make Stuff. Attendees can vote for their favorite skateboard deck with submissions from many talented artists including Jeremy Burks. Craft vendors will be selling their goods and the $6 cover includes treats from Nadamoo and drinks from Treaty Oak Rum. We Make Stuff runs from 7pm to midnight and is open to fashionistas and skaters 21 and over.

Many museums and galleries around town are participating in Austin Museum Day on Sunday. In addition to offering free admission, some venues are hosting special events.

Women and Their Work is showing their recently opened exhibit Red Hot Red Dot which features over two hundred paintings, sculptures, photos, and mixed media pieces by some of Texas' best contemporary artists. All works are priced at $500 or less and their sale goes to benefit the nonprofit gallery. Women and Their Work has also put together a game of "I Spy" for gallery visitors who want to more discover details in the displayed art.

Multi-media artist Hector Hernandez will be teaching collage illustration to visitors at the Mexic-Arte Museum. One of the talented artists whose work is part of the Young Latino Artists exhibit, Hernandez will demonstrate how to to use color, shapes, and patterns to create stunning collages.
