ACL Artist Profiles: Avett Brothers and Felice Brothers

Avett Brothers

The Avett Brothers formed in 2001 in Charlotte, North Carolina when banjoist Scott Avett and guitarist Seth Avett joined forces with bass player Bob Crawford. At the time, the brothers fronted a neo-punk band called Nemo. They soon lost interest in Nemo and found themselves pining for the acoustic folk and country music they acquired from their father's musical taste. Brotherly harmony between Scott and Seth pushed them into becoming a leading force in the root of minimalist music. Their sweet blend of folk, country, bluegrass, rock and pop should make for a delightful set to large draw at ACL. They take the stage Friday at 2:30 on the AMD stage.

Felice Brothers

Another brotherly-bound group will bring a little soul to the gargantuan Dell stage at ACL. The Felice Brothers are signed to Team Love Records and hail from New York. Perhaps one of the most electrifying moments in their performance career happened at the 2008 Newport Folk Festival. Rain and thundered emerged from above the stage, creating an awesome mystical vibe, yet causing The Felice Brothers to lose power. Without hesitation the band jumped off stage and began playing acoustic while gushing around barefoot in the glorious mud pit surrounding the stage. We can only hope that the Austin rain Gods can arrange a similar feat for their ACL set. They play Saturday on the Dell stage at 1:15.

I second Dave's recommendation; I thought the Avett Brothers were god awful at Stubbs, but Felice Brothers were phenomenal in the Habana tent at their official showcase.

They always appear to be on the edge of falling apart into chaos throughout their shows, like so many indie rock bands, but they're playing decidedly not-indie-rock. It's refreshing and fun. It's like the Basement Tapes for hipsters.

The Felice Brothers put on one of the best SXSW showcases that I attended this past year. Go see 'em.

Oh, and their new release is really good, too.
