New Release Tuesday: David Sylvian

David Sylvian Manafon (Samadhisound)

David Sylvian has been fluttering around the avant and esoteric edges of pop music since the '70s, fronting Japen. Since then, he's worked with everyone from Ryuichi Sakamoto to Robert Fripp. On Manafon, we find Sylvian exploring a roomy, warm kind of chamber music, highlighted most notably by his haunting baritone. Behind his striking voice, musicians Evan Parker and Keith Rowe, Fennesz and members of Polwechsel, Sachiko M and Otomo Yoshihide improvise and strike delicate balances between the sounds and space of each piece. “Small Metal Gods" is a highlight on this resounding success of a challenging record.
