Why We Don't Like You: Wyoming Cowboys
Each week, we'll look at some reasons to taunt, belittle, and bully the Longhorns' football opponent. Say howdy to the Wyoming Cowboys.
- Dick Cheney: The former vice president got his bachelor's and master's degrees at Wyoming after flunking out of Yale. Yesterday, he was on campus for the dedication of the Cheney International Center, paid for with $3.2 million in donations from Cheney and his wife. About 100 protesters heckled Cheney, who then returned to his nearby underground lair.
- We Giveth, and We Taketh Away: Following a long career as an assistant at UT, Fred Akers left to coach Wyoming for the 1975 and 1976 seasons. After going 2-9 his first year in Laramie, Akers turned the program around with eight wins, a share of the conference title, and an appearance in the Fiesta Bowl. Then Darrell Royal retired and we wanted Fred back. The underrated Akers won 86 games in the next 10 years as the Longhorns' head coach.
- The Air Up There: The Cowboys' home base, Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium, sits at an elevation of 7,220 feet, the highest among FBS teams. When filled to its capacity of 32,580, as it is expected to be on Saturday, the stadium becomes the third-largest city in Wyoming.
- School Colors: Brown and gold. Your colors are shit and piss.
