Longhorns Around The Web
Each Friday, we'll be offering up a sampling of Longhorn- and Big 12-related sports coverage making its way around the Web.
- Most of the news around the Big 12 this weekend revolved around Sam Bradford's strained shoulder, which was made even more intriguing with the announcement that Sooner tight end Jermaine Gresham is out for the season. But could it be that some lazy play-calling contributed to the hit that put Bradford on the sideline? From ESPN.com's Big 12 blog: "Here’s a nugget courtesy of ESPN’s Stats & Information that I found fascinating in light of what happened last week in the Oklahoma-BYU game. Before every pass Bradford threw, the Oklahoma quarterback lined up in the shotgun, and every time he handed the ball off, he was under center. It could have taken the BYU defense a few drives to figure that out, but on the last drive of the half, linebacker Coleby Clawson hit Bradford twice in three plays coming from the same spot, and eventually knocked him out of the game. To start the second half, backup quarterback Landry Jones lined up in the shotgun and handed the ball off."
- But it's not as though Texas doesn't have injury concerns of its own. Beyond the notorious string of injuries at tight end, Texas will be without offensive guard Michael Huey and middle linebacker Jared Norton this weekend. The Stateman covers the full spectrum of the injury implications.
- Lots of love this week for redshirt freshman DJ Monroe. But Mack Brown is still pretty realistic about his physical limitations despite his impressive speed. From his Monday press conference: "He's limited because of pass protection. He's not going to take on Roddrick Muckelroy or Sergio (Kindle). He may, but he's going to be in Colt's lap. You can't cut every time because they'll jump over you, they're too athletic. He will not be a guy that's going to go in there and play every down, because he can't. He can be a great special teams player."
- News this week that former Longhorn Jevan Snead and 21 of his Ole Miss teammates have come down with the swine flu. More on the possible implications of a NCAA-wide swine flu outbreak here.
- It might not shatter the ratings meter or anything, but this weekend's game will still be televised nationally courtesy of the Mountain West Conference and Versus. As long as it's in HD.
