Le Diamant Brut: The Night Marchers & Ideal Soul Mart

IDEAL SOUL MART

What’s the Deal: This indie pop duo of multi-instrumentalists Clay Fain and Adam Luikart have been featured on Le Diamant Brut before, a little over a year ago. But now, with their brand new self-titled debut out and several well-attended local shows under their belts, we figure it’s time to check back in with ISM. The duo, named after a convenience store in East Austin, has been in several Austin groups such as Crawling with Kings, The Drawing Board, Household Names and Friends of Lizzy.

Ideal Soul Mart is melodic and catchy while at the same time not overly polished and super-produced. There’s plenty of DIY and clank and fuzz surrounding the hooks. “Wrk” is a prime example of this. While the track is mighty clean with crisp, shiny tambourine, bright harmonies and piano; the distorted bass, guitar pick rakes, handclaps and warm vocals help keep the track grounded. “Don’t Fight It” is a good representation of the band’s sentimental side. Impressive vocal affection met pensive piano and the two ran off to have a wild and passionate love affair.

Something Interesting: According to their MySpace, the next show they are playing is InSite Magazine Night at The Parish on October 9th with Your Kisses Cause Crashes, The Pons and Whitman.

Other Tracks Worth Checking Out: “You Belong To The City” and “Acts of God”

THE NIGHT MARCHERS

What’s the Deal: The Night Marchers are the latest project of singer/guitarist John Reis, whom you might remember from Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu or the Sultans. And, if you are hoping for the same badass guitar riffs and SoCal punk style vocals you’ve come to expect from Reis, then you’re in luck. However, The Night Marchers’ debut, See You in Magic, is more expansive in terms of musical influence than much of Reis’ previous work. On the debut record, released on Vagrant Records and Reis’ own Swami Records, the music this foursome creates bops around between the sounds of hammering alt punk, surf guitar rock, soulful garage rock and other.

“Who’s Lady R U?” has a vintage, bluesy rock and roll vibe. Guitar jangles and chugs join forces with a constant tambourine and rhythm section and the occasional organ on this tune to make it an infectious hip-jiggler. The eerie, hypnotizing guitar riff that runs through “And I keep Holding On” has a “Paint It, Black” vibe that works well in combination with the SoCal punk glances woven throughout.

Something Interesting: The Night Marchers are playing Fun Fun Fun Fest this year. They’ll be on the Black stage Saturday at 2:50pm, according to the Fun Fun Fun website.

Other Tracks Worth Checking Out: “I Wanna Deadbeat You” and “Bad Bloods”
