Weekend Music Preview: WOXY BBQ @ Scoot Inn [Sunday]

Located just east of I-35 on 4th St., the getaway from Red River St. that is Scoot Inn hosts three inviting nights of music this weekend. On Friday, when the wind blows in The Low Lows’ doleful lo-fi beauty, ponder upon Brothers and Sisters’ affecting Americana, tango with Mr. Lewis & The Funeral 5’s experiments in punk ‘n’ polka, and order your whiskey neat to The Sideshow Tragedy’s country fried rock. Return and recover on Saturday with a substantial serving of Black Panda’s garage ditties, sample and savor Kingdom of Suicide Lovers’ dark concoctions, dip into Manikin’s absorbing rhythms, and save room for some guest acts (and Sunday’s show) as well.

WOXY.com recently relocated to Austin and they’re wasting no time in finding their feet in town. They present a mouth-watering backyard BBQ shindig on Sunday at Scoot Inn featuring live performances by Black Before Red, English Teeth, Martin Crane (Brazos), and TV Torso, with DJ Polecat piloting the beats between sets. Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase treats from a few of Austin’s favorite business’ such as Tito’s Handmade Vodka (21+ of course) and Sweet Leaf Tea, along with the underrated Ruby's Barbeque. WOXY’s HQ switch from Cincinnati to Austin is truly a fantastic development for our city and we’re eagerly anticipating the new HD video Lounge Act sessions, scheduled to start in October. And for the sake of full disclosure, we’re proud to note that Austinist’s Music Editor Paige Maguire has joined the WOXY team as Director of Marketing and Development. Congratulate her in person this Sunday!

We caught up with Marc Ferrino from Black Before Red and Low Line Caller earlier this week to check up on both bands’ recent activities.

How do you balance the time you spend on Black Before Red and Low Line Caller?

Very carefully. I’m really finding a lot of joy in writing for two different projects. It’s like playing two totally different characters for me. In Low Line Caller, I get to sing a little more dramatically and pretend to be a crooner of sorts. The music moves like waves and the singing has some room to swim around a bit. I must say that singing without an instrument has taken some getting use to. I now have the utmost respect for frontmen and frontwomen without instruments who can keep crowds engaged through dance and sheer personality.

In Black Before Red, the singing is much more exposed and exact. It’s up front and punctual. It’s pop and it’s coming at you whether you like it or not. Which is what my songwriting as always been about since I was a teenager in love. I grew up trying to write this way and still my favorite music falls right into this category.

Low Line Caller has been recording new material at Cacaphony Recorders -- how is that going and when can we expect the new album?

The new stuff is going very well. It’s going to be a four song EP and not a full length. The songs are really great and show a step in a new direction. I think mostly in how the songs are recorded. A few of the songs on High Def Soft Core were me singing over already recorded material. Low Line Caller used to be solely instrumental and the music was thickly layered with many different tracks. This recording is much more focused in terms of writing songs with music and vocal melody in mind. It’s just come natural after playing together for a while.

Any plans for another Black Before Red album?

Black Before Red does have an album coming out this year and we’re trying to release it sometime this fall, maybe early November or just in time for Santa. It has all of the old boys back in action -- Brian Cassidy, Marc Dickey, Brent Baldwin, Kevin Schneider and myself. The reason it has taken so long is some of the boys have had to run off and have their affairs with other bands -- cheap hotel flings with the likes of Shearwater and Okkervil River, both brilliant in their own right but ours is a marriage goddamn it!!!!!! The new material I truly enjoy and can’t wait to get it done and out to our adoring fans. It’s really great because Brian Cassidy and Brent Baldwin have written a few songs for the record and that has made all of the difference in the world. We have plans to record 14 songs and then narrow it down to whatever sounds like a great record. Stay tuned welcome ears.

Thank you for speaking with Austinist.
