What’s the Deal: Starting out with an introduction to the band through the video for “Aluminum Baseball Bat” is a great idea. It’s a longer, old school, fifties pop love song with soulful vocals, sock hop guitar numbers and spoken word about heartbreak over background doo wops. The video follows the lovesick singer down Lucy Street in Atlanta (Howlies’ hometown) as he grooves along, meets various characters, uses the occasional prop to further the lyrics. There’s even a street party breakdown complete with roller girl, robot and everyone else from the random people committee. It gets a tad obnoxious by the end, but they get major points for creativity.
They just released their debut, Trippin’ with Howlies, earlier this year, and most of the songs are about acquiring, losing and hooking up with girls. While they’re not exactly changing the world, they have a knack for making fun, refreshing rock and roll that makes you sad you didn’t grow up in an era where this was considered pop music.
Something Interesting: Their debut was produced by the legendary Kim Fowley (The Modern Lovers, The Runaways, The Seeds).

What’s the Deal: When Nano Whitman isn’t managing one of Austin’s most beloved pie joints, Homeslice, he’s playing sweet, relaxing and lyrically witty songs on his guitar. Nano, who you might remember from Nano & The Afternoon, is now back to performing as a solo artist. A handful of his latest songs are available on a self-titled EP released in October of last year.
One of the more quirky, catchy songs on the recording is “28”. It’s heavy on the rhyme and soft on most everything else. Light background tones of keys with warm bass pulses, hissing drums and various softly spoken sounds buzz around in this sentimental song about the singer’s family. “Just to Kiss You” features the complimentary vocals of Kat Edmonson. It’s a sweet, folk pop song with a chorus that any human with blood in their veins could identify with.
Something Interesting: He’s playing Thursday at Lambert’s with Kat Edmonson. If you miss that one, he’ll be at the Tiniest Bar in Texas for a free show Friday night.
