Phil Elverum's prolific project has released a handful of must-haves for the music nerd. The Microphones' The Glow Pt. 2 (2001) and his first release as Mount Eerie, No Flashlight: Songs of the Fulfilled Night (2005) are both works of wonder. In recent years, Mount Eerie has continued down the dirgy, lo-fi road it helped pave in the early '00s with a handful of spectacular releases. Last year's Dawn: Winter Journal and its accompanying book were both wonderful, and this year's release is no slouch either. Focusing on familiar themes (nature, home, loneliness and purpose), Wind's Poem mixes gentle whispers with dirty layers of vocals, simple melody with crashing percussion and lots of really incredible-sounding guitar. Elverum's meticulously self-recorded instruments haunt each other's mixes; they all blend, bleed, live and pounce each other in the most beautiful of ways. Highly recommended, especially if you enjoyed Black Wooden Ceiling Opening. Buy the album here.
Ben Chasny is lucky. Either not many people know Six Organs of Admittance began as a side project for Comets on Fire, or no one cares, because he almost never has to bear the dubious (and lazy) comparison critics love to make when one guy in a band starts another band. We've already tip-toed close enough to that here, let's just stop it. Once again, Chasny's talent has exceeded expectations. Luminous Night is edgy, beautiful, epic and -- at times -- just plain weird. "Anesthesia" sounds like a bizarre and haunting monologue, unfolding like a ghostly music box. In fact, all the songs ooze this sort of darkly spiritual feeling. Excellent. Sample the album at Drag City.

I hate to nitpick, but I hate not to even more: 6OOA isn't a Comets on Fire side project. it started without Chasny and he joined later, after he was already recording as 6OOA.
