Suspend your disbelief in the healing powers of irony and neon for just one moment, and open your heart a bit to the visiting charms of Baltimore's EAR PWR and TORO Y MOI from Columbia, South Carolina.
Confectioners of jams like the hyper "Future Eyes," EAR PWR fight doldrums with the same attention-deficit as their other labelmates on Carpark records. 90s American dance and touches of Primal Scream can be picked out here and there on their latest release, Super Animal Brothers III.
TORO Y MOI may also make you move your feet, but their tunes are less rave, more stripped-back rock and roll "Rave On." Like kindred spirits Wavves, this group trades in guitar feedback and poor production, though the man behind the project, one Chaz Bundick, also dabbles in electronic psych as well.
Local groups Human Milk and Follow That Bird! will open the show. Also a one-man project, Human Milk stars Kerstan Wallace as the creator of clever, Unicorns-like electronic pop. Last year's Grapefruit Clouds was an unexpected delight. And because the rock needs to be brought, also appearing is Follow That Bird! to lend their spare, energetic gusto to the evening's array.
