So if you aren’t sold on District 9 yet, we’re not sure what we can say to convince you. We've heard rumors about people like that, who are all “aliens aren’t real so why should I care, sci-fi is stupid, blah blah blah.” But we believe (hope) those are just rumors.

The deal is, director Neill Blomkamp didn’t get to make Halo, so instead he ran out and made this little-indie-that-could paralleling apartheid (and our own American border issues and xenophobia) with from-a-whole-other-PLANET-not-just-another-country-illegal-aliens. Do we even have to say it? We’re in—all the way in.

As if the cryptic marketing campaign and disturbingly realistic website aren’t enough, District 9 is also blowing up on a little site called Twitter, where thousands (like Jordin Sparks) have expressed their excitement.

But you don’t have to know Twitter or have a thing for American Idol to be pumped about this movie. Everyone is in—the hipsters (see also: sci-fi geeks, the tweens (see also: Jordin Sparks), and the critics (100% on RottenTomatoes), and our Magic Eight Ball says this is going to be the hit of the summer.

You don’t want to be the one hearing about it from the IT guy—the best way to make sure that doesn’t happen is to hit the 11:55 p.m. screening at the Alamo South Lamar Thursday night. It’s a straightforward plan of attack: catch all the alien madness, be emotionally moved by all the Hotel Rwanda similarities, then realize that it’s all just some badass CGI. Walk out raving.

Austin is a late-night town, and no one is going to be scared away by a little lack of sleep, so we suggest you buy your tickets now. If you miss this showing, we recommend staying home Friday and hitting the 11:05am screening. It’s the only way you’ll be able to avoid spoilers once your coworker opens his big mouth.
