Silicon Labs Marathon Relay To Make Up, Set New Guinness World Record

The fifth annual Silicon Labs Austin Marathon Relay this September is inaugurating a new Guinness World Record award for "fastest overall marathon team."

As there's no such listing in the Guinness World Record, this year's race winners will automatically earn the distinction. It's expected that they'll come in close to the reigning course champions, Team Jack and Adam’s, who clocked in at 2:21 and 15 seconds last year. The current solo men's and women's record holders, both set in recent years, are 2:03:59 and 2:15:25—on the other end of the record-holding spectrum, other equally worthy titles include the fastest marathon dressed as Santa Claus (2:55:50), fastest marathon dressed as a vegetable (3:34:55), and the fastest marathon dressed as a leprechaun (4:22:08). "Not only will this be our largest relay ever, but we’ll be setting another record as well,” said Dave Swincher, race director and president of Junior Achievement of Central Texas. “The team that wins this year’s Silicon Labs Austin Marathon Relay will also set an official Guinness World Record when they cross the finish line. You don’t get to do or see that every day.”

Over 2,000 runners are expected to compete this year, making it the second largest marathon relay in the U.S. The race is split into five segments—one 12K, two 10Ks and two 5Ks—and snakes along the Lady Bird Lake trail up to the Capitol.

Funds raised from the relay go to help Junior Achievement, a global nonprofit that teaches kids the values of fiscal and economic responsibility, and aims to provide students with a deeper understanding of work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy.

I know someone that set a record for eating five pot brownies and one oxy and running a marathon. (6:36:00)
