Each Friday, we'll be offering up a sampling of Longhorn- and Big 12-related sports coverage making its way around the Web.
- Video: "Big XII Schedule Breakdown": ESPN breaks down the schedule of the Big 12 South powerhouses. Lots of similarities to the sked that sandbagged the Horns down the stretch last season. After a tough stretch against Oklahoma, Missouri and Oklahoma State, the Longhorns end the season with four cupcakes, in addition to their notoriously weak non-conference schedule. And if the Cowboys or Red Raiders once again emerge as a third wheel, Oklahoma will have the opportunity to trounce both in the final two weeks of the season. As in 2008, the short-sighted pollsters could get final say in the Big 12 South.
- A recap of last week's Big 12 media days: We're not sure why Colt bailing hay got so much coverage, but stick with the article and you'll find several little gems. For instance, Missouri's Sean Weatherspoon saying the Tigers were "definitely" the most talented Big 12 team last season. We can't know what the followup question was, but hopefully someone had the wherewithall to remind Weatherspoon that his Tigers amassed a 73-10 combined first-half deficit against Texas and Oklahoma.
- Video: "Cribs, Aaron Ross style": Super Bowl champion and former Longhorn Aaron Ross opens up his pad in New Jersey. Predictably, Ross has got some pretty nice swag. Unfortunately, he still lives in New Jersey.
- Texas360Now.com: A new Texas athletics site brought to you by former Longhorn ballers Kevin Durant, Royal Ivey, TJ Ford, and DJ Augustin, among others. It's Twitter meets blogging meets some pretty questionable grammar.
- In this month's Esquire, Vince Young reflects on his rough upbringing, his recent tough times in Tennessee, and what he said in the huddle before making the play that won the national championship.
- While the schedule has some ominous similarities to that of 2008, the Texas team itself bears significant similarities to 2005's title team, from ESPN's Tim Griffin. Also, it was Jordan Shipley's season-long hamstring injury that year that has allowed him to return to the team for 2009. There must be hundreds of these.
- "UT's Shipley Handles Adversity": After his prodigious high school career, it seemed unlikely that it would take six years for Shipley to become the featured receiver in the Longhorn offense. The fact that injury nearly ended his career twice makes it seem nearly impossible that it ever happened. The Houston Chronicle's Mike Finger traces Shipley's journey and his relationship with McCoy. What's the over-under for the number of times national broadcasters invoke the "You know, McCoy and Shipley are roommates!" anecdote this season?
- Not surprisingly, McCoy has been named to the Davey O'Brien Award watch list. Guy deserves it, after narrowly losing the Heisman Trophy, national title opportunity, and now Big XII Male Athlete of the Year to Sam Bradford, all due to the now infamous BCS Vote That Keeps on Giving.
- Off the gridiron, Texas Basketball could be in line for a big pay day. It's tough to imagine Texas drawing 75,000 in the heart of football country, especially considering their "high profile" opponent lost most of its starpower to the NBA this summer, but if you're planning on making the journey north, get your ticket info here. Don't forget to factor in at least $30 for parking, and be sure to carry plenty of walkin' around money.
