Statesman No Longer For Sale

After nearly a year on the market, the Statesman is no longer for sale. Parent company Cox Enterprises announced today that they will retain ownership of the paper.

In a memo to employees, Statesman publisher Michael Vivio said that although the paper received substantial interest from potential buyers, Cox "did not feel that the offers reflected the true value of the Statesman."

In the past year, Cox has sold two papers in Colorado, 14 media properites in North Carolina, and three papers in Texas. Two Cox papers, the Longview News-Journal and the Marshall News Messenger, remain for sale.

Soon after going on the market last year, the Statesman attracted interest from investment firms, a group headed by Austin residents, and some small and midsize newspaper chains. More recently, the paper hosted potential buyers from Midland, Waco, and Arkansas.

The thing is, they don't want to have a fire sale when later on they can get more for it, hasn't anyone realized this is more the realization of the end of a crisis, and not the last to be heard of it being sold??
