New Release Tuesday: Bad Veins & Wild Beasts

Wild Beasts are a quartet hailing from Leeds, UK, featuring above all else an enormous, show-stopping falsetto from vocalist Hayden Thorpe. There's lush, dynamic pop tunes -- all bearing fruit -- on Two Dancers, but there's no denying the centerpiece. Moaning, yelping and cooing about girls, the night's dirty underbelly and the pretty things that destroy our innocence, Thorpe offers a sort of answer to The The's desperate Dusk; he trills and woos the dangerous side of attraction and temptation with boyish charms. At times, his voice sails into truly soprano territory, making the sexual undertones even more exotic, blurring the lines between male and female boundaries. Sure, it's Brit-pop, but it's murky and seedy and all together taboo. Highly recommended.

Bad Veins have been making Cincinnati proud since 2006, performing as a duo birthed from a dusty attic deep in the Midwest. Listening to the record reveals a broader vision, however, as strings, horns and layers of vocals sweep over the songs. There's quite a bit of Okkervil River here (particularly on album opener "Found") and some National dramatics as well. These are compliments, but more than anything they're indications of a band that's on its way to something great. Stay tuned.
