Weekend Art Roundup
Tonight from 7-10pm, Industry Screenprint Studio (2503 B E. 6th) is hosting another installment of PRINT+addiction, a t-shirt printing party that features the designs of a different artist each time. This month PRINT+addiction welcomes one of Austin's most prominent street artists, Matthew Rodriguez. The studio will set up their eight color screenprint press with eight designs created by Rodriguez. Participants will learn how to print their own shirt and can purchase a shirt for $15 or bring their own and pay a $5 printing fee.
Also occurring on this fine Friday is the All Austin Handmade Bash taking place at the Beauty Bar from 7-11pm. Celebrating the launch of The WonderCraft, a new craft class collective coming to town, the event will feature all things fashion and craft. Calling all crafty ladies and the men who love them (or better yet, craft themselves), the Bash only costs $2 and all the proceeds from admission go to Austin Dog Rescue.
On Saturday, Domy Books is celebrating the opening of their latest gallery exhibit, Libres y Lokas: El Espectaculo de la Pobreza. The show documents the lucha libre wrestlers and transgendered queens of Monterrey, Mexico with photography, video, and a rather impressive architectural installation. While at Domy, make sure to check out Alphabet in the project space. After the reception at the gallery, from 7-9pm, festivities continue at Charlies (1301 Lavaca) for a Tranny Show.
If you haven't done so already done so, stop by Arthouse this weekend to check out the twenty-fourth edition of their New American Talent exhibit. NAT:24 was curated by Hamza Walker from the University of Chicago and features some really strong examples of work by emerging contemporary artists. Jenn Figg's "Deadfall (canopy gap)" is an impressive installation of a forest scene created entirely of cardboard in life-size detail. Austin's Mark Aguhar's "Daydreamer" is a series of graphic, if strangely adorable, nudes in watercolors. It's also great to see Debra Broz's clever and carefully constructed altered ceramic figurines in the museum. Admission to the Arthouse is free and NAT:24 runs through August 23rd; stop by this weekend or on your lunch break sometime in the next few weeks.
